Can I go door to door advertising my business?

I want to start a home maintenance company. Don’t have much money to advertise. Can I go door to door and ask home owner or renters if the need anything repaired around the house. I’m in Texas, so I’ve been told that I don’t need a license to do home repairs. But do I need permits and insurance? If anybody could give me additional information that would help me on my future business, would be gratefully appreciated.

Answer by knowitall
A permit and a license are basically the same. Insurance is not required, but may keep you from getting some jobs. I would never hire someone coming to my door since the crime rate has increased so I will not let anyone in that I have not called to come. A card or flyer on ( not in) the mailbox is safer for all. You need to be on some websites for local work though since that is how most people find help now. Once you get a few hobs, word of mouth will be your best advertising. Be sure you have a sign on your truck with your name, what you do ( Handy Man ) and a phone number.

Does anyone know how to create an advertising business model for an Internet company in excel?

Also, do you know how to do the equivalent for an Affiliate Program? What assumptions should a internet startup make; and how do we create the model in excel?

Answer by Labella
You need more than excel! check out http://www.paloalto.com/ps/ap/

The affiliate marketing one would require a slightly different approach: google “affiliate marketing school” or “affiliate marketing” to get some resources.

How can I efficiently learn about the business of online advertising for a health Web site I am developing?

I have a marketing background, so don’t need a general marketing course. I need to know the products, language, terms, metrics, etc… of online advertising in 2007. For example, what categories of advertising “products” exist? What kinds of fees can be charged, how are fees determined (I know based on traffic, clicks, but more specifically…?) How is Web advertising marketed/sold to advertisers, particularly in the health and medicine arena. I want a primer on the subject, but would also like to see some quantitative examples relevant to the business in 2007. A “Dummys” book would be a good start, but an up-to-date one doesn’t exist. Maybe there are 1-2 day courses. I found one via a Google search, but maybe someone out there has a recommendation. I’m not too worried about cost, as long as I can get up the learning curve quickly. Many thanks to all who will answer!

Try this site:

searchenginewatch.com

That’s a good place to start, so you won’t make any mistakes when first making your web site.

There’s lots of ways to advertise your site, from paying to asking for reciprocal links for free…but watch out for the “link farms” where you can sign up for reciprocal links and they take yours…google will not be happy.

Don’t pay for search engine submission…do it yourself to only three search engines: yahoo, google and msn. All the little search engines will crawl the big guys with time. With google it may take up to six months before they recognize your site…so when you get your site, enter it into google.

Make sure your keywords match your content on each page you have on your site. meta keywords.

I’ve also found htmlgoodies real helpful to make yourself a site. Don’t go for the “What you see is what you get” Template sites: wysiwyg If too many people have that same templet, google thinks of your site as being “spam” site.

Hmmm…well that’s enough for today…you’ve got lots to learn.
Wish you the best.

how do I start up my own advertising business?

Hello, I’m wanting to know how to get people to buy advertising space on my website and get them more traffic to their site. Do I have to buy more traffic to my website so that they can get more traffic to their website?

Answer by Kevin Naidoo
Gaining website traffic is always changeling but luckily for you there are several tried and tested ways of getting good traffic please see below :

1. get on search engines – make sure your website is submitted to Google and Yahoo.
2. Write , Write , Write – their are plenty of ezine websites around , post regular articles about some of the services you offer and make sure you cleverly place your links in between sentences but please don’t Spam.
3. Submit your link to dmoz.org and cragslist – These two websites are of high quality , they both are very well ranked on google , in fact DMOZ is the Google directory.
4. Their are plenty of free directories around , find the top ranked ones or the ones that are relevant to your industry and make sure you post frequent adverts.
5. Paid advertising – I would suggest signing up for Google adwords , which is a PPC system – this will bring you fast targeted traffic.

I have also included a link to an excellent ebook that will give you more than 300 ideas on how to advertise effectively online : http://kwisan.com/sponsored/ebooks/

Do all the above correctly and you will build a sustainable on line business but beware of over expectations ,set daily goals and work towards those goals one day at a time.

I want to work in advertising. Which major is better for this, Business/Marketing or Communications?

I’m a college freshman and my declared major is currently Business/Marketing, however I’m not crazy about a lot of the business classes I have to take and I talked to my advisor who told me that might be a sign that I should change my major. But a friend told me today that he knows someone who graduated with a communications degree to go into advertising but preference was sometimes given to business/marketing people. So is communications as good as B/M?

Answer by chilenita_tx
That was the same problem i had when I started college. I am a communication mayor and I am focusing in PR with a minor in Marketing, that took off a lot of the math classes for marketing. If you want to focus on advertising make sure you have a lot of digital imaging classes. Also if you can get a second language to focus on and maybe even do an internship with that right there will open a lot of doors. Try to get involve in your school’s news paper and learn how to write well, and work with their advertising.
All of these have been advises from grad students, professors and personal experience. Try talking to people on the field or your teachers, unfortunately advisors are sometimes clueless.
Hope this helps and best of luck in school.

Go to http://www.score.org/ to find the nearest SCORE chapter. In the upper left hand corner is a box to enter your zip code. Your nearest SCORE chapter will be on the next screen. Contact them to arrange for a free one on one meeting with a SCORE counselor to discuss opening an advertising business.

what are techniques for advertising a small business?

i am doing a project for a class and i need help with coming up with advertising ideas. here are some examples that i am looking for….flyers placed on car windshields and door hangers advertising the business? can anyone think of any more ideas like these that would be for advertising for a small business. these things would be print ideas, no internet things, thats another part of the project that i have to do that i havent done yet. also if anyone has any creative advertising things that they have done in the past….thanks!

Answer by Dave
Hi,

Good idea placing fliers on car windshields and door hangars. The reason those techniques work is because the customer MUST at least look at it to remove it or throw it out. Once you understand the fact that most people will only give it a 5-10 second chance to grab their attention, it’s ESSENTIAL that you do exactly that – GRAB THEIR ATTENTION.

Be sure that your printed materials have a very effective headline that gives the reader a benefit and reason to continue reading through your marketing piece. I have identified several other advertising techniques that you can use to promote your small business while staying off the internet.

Run a classified ad in the local newspaper. Be sure to make it heavy on user benefits. Rather than just saying who you are and what you do, explain to them the BENEFITS they will receive when they come to your business.

Depending on your business, you can approach a local printing company and make a deal to exchange print jobs for your services or for something that will be of benefit to them but low cost to you. The printing can be used for handouts, brochures, vinyl’s, banners, etc.

Put vinyl lettering on the windows of your vehicles. Perhaps take scenic shots with the vehicle and vinyl in view. Again, use the deal with a print shop to outsource this. Also, print vinyl’s to place in your businesses storefront windows.

Create cool stickers to give away for free at events and store locations that will wind up in strange places and increase your business’s exposure. Print shop may aid in this effort as well.

Print and copy loads of fliers to put up around town and advertise the benefits of your business and give away coupons on the fliers. Also, hand out fliers in person and talk to locals and tourists to get additional information on their interests.

Submit letters to the editor in newspapers to raise awareness of your business. Signature the bottom with your company name and a brief benefit or reason to call you. Comment on very controversial topics that many people are sure to read.

Much like the print company alliance, make a deal with a local radio station to exchange air time for some benefit you can provide them with. This will allow you to do things like run ads, host talk shows about topics related to your business and more.

Good luck with your small business. Be sure to post a question if you would like some suggestions for online advertising techniques. You could also check out http://www.strategicedge.ca for more advertising and marketing techniques and tips.

I need great free or low cost advertising ideas for a very small seasonal business.?

I have a letters from Santa business where parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc go on my website and can order a letter to the kid(s) in their life that is personalized to each child from Santa Claus and postmarked from the North Pole. I have the back end of my business completely in order; however I need some free or inexpensive ways to advertise this business. I will be utilizing press releases as I am teaming up with a charity and donating from each of my letters to that charity. This will give me a little more newsworthiness with the press releases. My main target is women. Ad rates in women’s magazines are outrageous. Even my local newspapers and community publications seem to want an arm and leg for even for the smaller ads. I don’t have to focus locally as my service is available nationally in the U.S. I need ideas for online and offline marketing that will not break the bank! I really want to saturate with advertising the five weeks after thanksgiving. HELP!

Answer by Accelerated Marketing
Consider a joint venture with popular websites that receive a lot of seasonal traffic (Privately owned smaller sites as opposed to Overstock.com). Offer a revenue share for companies that want to offer a banner of yours on their homepage, feature you in their customer newsletter, etc. You have a great product idea, and there should be a number of companies willing to feature you. Also try using stumbleupon.com for advertising cheaply. will get you a fair amount of traffic, and their users are very responsive to campaigns like this.
