How can I efficiently learn about the business of online advertising for a health Web site I am developing?

I have a marketing background, so don’t need a general marketing course. I need to know the products, language, terms, metrics, etc… of online advertising in 2007. For example, what categories of advertising “products” exist? What kinds of fees can be charged, how are fees determined (I know based on traffic, clicks, but more specifically…?) How is Web advertising marketed/sold to advertisers, particularly in the health and medicine arena. I want a primer on the subject, but would also like to see some quantitative examples relevant to the business in 2007. A “Dummys” book would be a good start, but an up-to-date one doesn’t exist. Maybe there are 1-2 day courses. I found one via a Google search, but maybe someone out there has a recommendation. I’m not too worried about cost, as long as I can get up the learning curve quickly. That’s a good place to start, so you won’t make any mistakes when first making your web site.

There’s lots of ways to advertise your site, from paying to asking for reciprocal links for free…but watch out for the “link farms” where you can sign up for reciprocal links and they take yours…google will not be happy.

Don’t pay for search engine submission…do it yourself to only three search engines: yahoo, google and msn. All the little search engines will crawl the big guys with time. With google it may take up to six months before they recognize your site…so when you get your site, enter it into google.

Make sure your keywords match your content on each page you have on your site. meta keywords.

I’ve also found htmlgoodies real helpful to make yourself a site. Don’t go for the “What you see is what you get” Template sites: wysiwyg If too many people have that same templet, google thinks of your site as being “spam” site.

Any others concerned that employment opportunities will decrease even more? I would hold off hiring anyone until I knew what new taxes and mandatory benefits may be required from Congress.
This republic is in dire need of more private sector jobs and it seems the federal government is determined to stop job creation for small business.

It does. I own a business, and if the House version becomes law, I will have to start offering insurance if I hire 20 people, so after I get to about 18, I won’t hire any more employees. I’ll give the ones I have more hours or hire independent contractors.

I mean besides worrying that if the company you work for goes bankrupt there goes your health insurance and the COBRA extension; Also, wouldn’t it be amazing if you could work the job you *want* rather than the one that offers the best benefits. Why do we still have this system as it limits self employment, small business growth and creates “job lock”? Ever tried buying insurance independently outside of an office pool with two pre-existing conditions? Even if you cut back on absolutely everything, it’s still unaffordable.

Wanting to know how to find out two things: 1) the best health insurance coverage and 2) for the best and most affordable price. My husband is the sole proprietor of a small business he runs.
