How can I efficiently learn about the business of online advertising for a health Web site I am developing?

I have a marketing background, so don’t need a general marketing course. I need to know the products, language, terms, metrics, etc… of online advertising in 2007. For example, what categories of advertising “products” exist? What kinds of fees can be charged, how are fees determined (I know based on traffic, clicks, but more specifically…?) How is Web advertising marketed/sold to advertisers, particularly in the health and medicine arena. I want a primer on the subject, but would also like to see some quantitative examples relevant to the business in 2007. A “Dummys” book would be a good start, but an up-to-date one doesn’t exist. Maybe there are 1-2 day courses. I found one via a Google search, but maybe someone out there has a recommendation. I’m not too worried about cost, as long as I can get up the learning curve quickly. That’s a good place to start, so you won’t make any mistakes when first making your web site.

There’s lots of ways to advertise your site, from paying to asking for reciprocal links for free…but watch out for the “link farms” where you can sign up for reciprocal links and they take yours…google will not be happy.

Don’t pay for search engine submission…do it yourself to only three search engines: yahoo, google and msn. All the little search engines will crawl the big guys with time. With google it may take up to six months before they recognize your site…so when you get your site, enter it into google.

Make sure your keywords match your content on each page you have on your site. meta keywords.

I’ve also found htmlgoodies real helpful to make yourself a site. Don’t go for the “What you see is what you get” Template sites: wysiwyg If too many people have that same templet, google thinks of your site as being “spam” site.

Of course, the better organized you and your team are, the less scrambling they’ll have to do when something happens.

Watch firefighters when there isn’t a fire – or the military practising their drills. The fireman’s axe is always in the same toolbox – they clean the tools daily – and put them back in the same place. That way, when something happens (it’s rarely the same fire at the same location), they know where to get the axe to smash a locked door, etc.

Build routines. Get organized. Then when something happens, you know where your tools are.

I would start with a niche that you are good with and start working it. You will learn other forms of marketing as you go.

Is it better to learn Spanish fluently or both Spanish & French to an intermediate level for a business career?

I´m currently in Spain on an intensive Spanish course as part of my gap year. My current plans are to study Spanish straight to the end of June. I´m considering changing my plans to, instead of having 30 weeks of spanish, to having 15 weeks of Spanish and 15 weeks of French.

Which do you think is better, fluency in Spanish or knowing both French and Spanish to an intermediate level from a business career sense? Which option would be more useful?

I know “best” isn’t the right word, but I am about to graduate with a Bachelors in Finance and I am very interested in International Finance. I have some Spanish background, but I feel that I should be more familiar with another major language.
